When the interpreter asked him to tell us about his history, Teddy Ndaro stops for a second and says: «The dream of coming to Santander?». And that word, dream, is always repeated in his story. «That beats all of my wishes». He is the next to last in his class, but for him its a great victory. It was not simple for him to come here. «I started sailing thirteen years ago. I was a boy scout in Mombasa -the second most important city after Nairobi, the capital- and they introduced us to sailing world thanks to a British women that lived in Kenya».
He liked it from the first moment and spent, since then, time training and sailing until his first opportunity. «In 2011, they took us to the African Games celebrated in Mozambique and I met a guy from Seychelles who used to sail. He had already been three times at the Olympic Games. And I thought: If someone from Africa has able to go three times, I also can prepare myself and try it». That was his obsession from that moment.
But its difficult to get aid, support and, specially, money. Difficulties, internal problems, lack of resources... Ndaro knew that Santander was the city where seats for Rio were played. He started his own crusade. Through Facebook and by email he contacted the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and, after kept insisting, he got a name: Teresa Lara. She was the reponsible of Emerging Countries Program, that has allowed countries with few sailing tradition -or few resources- to be in this Sailing World Championships. Advise trainers, teach athletes with the preparation... The Kenyan was not part of the selection process of this program, but Teresa got him a boat to compete and all he needed during his stay in Cantabria -food, accommodation...-. «Step by step I arrived in Santander».
The guy cant stop smiling while speaking. «The opening ceremony -in Las Llamas park- was a very special momento for me. I carried the flag of my country and it was the first time that someone from Kenya participated in a World Competition». Ndaro stretches his arms surrounded by his all over the world colleagues and says that, what he is living is «above his expectations». Although he finishes the 877 in the global ranking or the next to last, until now, in Laser Standard.
