There are many other shorelines, shared with several towns close to Santander. These are not far away and they definitely deserve a visit. Spectacular views, hidden coves and some religious fervour as is the tradition in Santander. From La Virgen del Mar and beyond.

The very image of this hermitage sums up the devotion that many people from Santander have, and the madonnas story is full of curiosities and customs. The beaches surroundings include a small island where the hermitage is found and is six kilomentres away from the centre of Santander. In Corban, close to this enchanting beach, you can see its seminary and there are lots of restaurants perfect for a quick snack or a proper lunch. Having some calamari here after a day at the beach is highly recommended.

If you are a beach-lover you have plenty of places to sunbathe and have a swim further away from the city too. Santa Cruz de Bezana boasts two beaches popular with locals. Covachos beach, which may be difficult to access but the view of the cliffs and sea rocks makes it really worth the effort, is one. And the other is San Juan de la Canal, famous for the bonfires made there each June 23rd to welcome the summer.

If you keep following the road heading to Liencres (municipality of Pielagos) and its impressive pine forest, you will see many bars and restaurants on the way. The opportunity to visit yet another beach greets you at almost every turning on this stunning coastal road. The most famous of these beaches are La Arnia, an image which appears on lots of postcards, and Portio, which is small but maintains its wildness and secrecy. Although driving is the recommended way of getting to all of these beaches, riding a bike is a great option if you feel strong enough and willing to do it. There is always a place to stop and have a drink close to every beach.
