He came for the first time to Santander last June. When EL DIARIO asked him about his objective in this World Championship, the Australian Mathew Belcher didnt doubt for a second: to win. Yesterday, the aussiemagnified his legend. He added one title to his four 470 world competition titles in a row, the second with Will Ryan as a crew member.
Belcher and Ryan won the title the same day that the Spanish team gave a warning call for the future. Jordi Xammar and Joan Herp, both from Barcelona, won the Medal Race in front of the Dune. From the first bouy, the world champions and Europe junior champions in 2013 -they have other junior title- led about the 470 most powerful fleet. Behind, Belcher and Ryan controlled the Croatian fleet composed by Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic to win definitely the golden medal.
The guys from Barcelona gained public support at the Dune before the race starting. Xammar climbed up to the commentators platform, took the microphone and cheered the people on. When they came back with the victory in the Medal Race, it seemed that the Spanish had won the title.
They took so many pictures with their fans and stayed next to the Dune almost one hour. «Its amazing all this people. We seem to be football players», said Xammar. No one can demand them anything and Xammar and Herp have achieved a seat for Spain in Rio and have become one of the best ten crews in the world.
